Are we okay with silent AI note-takers

At a PTA meeting last week, a vendor demoed an AI that transcribes and summarizes everyone’s comments automatically. The accessibility upside is real, but I’m worried about consent, data retention, and accountability — should participants opt in, who owns the record, and how do we prevent silent normalization of surveillance?

We piloted this at our neighborhood council: ran it opt‑in only for a month with a posted 30‑day auto‑delete and a big “Pause notes” button everyone could see, and it defused most concerns. If @organizers can’t get explicit opt‑in, at least state it up front and show when it’s active so there are “no surprises”.

That 7-second pause sounds impactful! I’ve found that having a brief prompt like ‘Let me think about that’ can make it feel less awkward. Have you tried varying the timing based on the caller’s tone?

I think transparency is key — if we use these AI note-takers, there should be clear guidelines about data retention and who can access those records. Maybe starting with a simple opt-in process could help ease concerns about consent.
